About Invokana

Invokana is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of well-known pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson. It belongs to a class of drugs called SGLT2, or sodium-glucose cotransporter 2, made to help patients with Type 2 diabetes. These drugs work to flush excess blood sugar from the body by making glucose leave the body in the urine. They were approved for sale in the U.S. in 2013, followed closely by Invokamet, a similar drug. Together, both of these drugs made Johnson & Johnson more than $1.4 billion in 2016 alone. However, numerous complaints of adverse side effects caused by Invokana soon came rolling in, leading the FDA to release multiple warnings. Eventually, in 2017, the FDA issued a black box warning, the FDA’s highest warning for dangerous drugs.

The Side Effects

Many of the side effects associated with Invokana have been minor, but studies and FDA warnings have linked Invokana to serious, life-threatening risks. Some of the serious side effects include:

  • Low blood pressure
  • Low blood sugar
  • Bone fractures
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Kidney infection
  • Other kidney issues
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Blood infection

A clinical trial launched by the FDA also found that patients who took Invokana for Type 2 diabetes were twice as likely to require leg, foot, or toe amputations. Many of these other side effects, especially those that affect the kidneys, can be seriously debilitating and may even be fatal. If you or someone you love suffered any of the above side effects after taking Invokana, contact our lawyer immediately.

Seeking Justice & Compensation

Hundreds of lawsuits have already been filed against Johnson & Johnson, many of which claim the company was negligent in manufacturing the drug and failed to adequately warn patients and doctors of the potentially deadly risks. Lawsuits also claim that the company created an unnecessarily dangerous drug, and failed to adequately test the medication before sale.
