Invokana is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of well-known pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson. It belongs to a class of drugs called SGLT2, or sodium-glucose cotransporter 2, made to help patients with Type 2 diabetes. These drugs work to flush excess blood sugar from the body by making glucose leave the body in the urine. They were approved for sale in the U.S. in 2013, followed closely by Invokamet, a similar drug. Together, both of these drugs made Johnson & Johnson more than $1.4 billion in 2016 alone. However, numerous complaints of adverse side effects caused by Invokana soon came rolling in, leading the FDA to release multiple warnings. Eventually, in 2017, the FDA issued a black box warning, the FDA’s highest warning for dangerous drugs.
